The season has started strong for our 8A Lady Cubs Volleyball team. The girls continue to grow more and more on the court with new aspects being learned daily. This group of girls really enjoy playing and achieving goals they never thought they could do one month ago. Their season started September 18 with a game at Bob Hope School. After coming just short of a win (21-25) on the first game, the girls rallied hard and slaughtered the Lady Eagles 25-13 in the second. With a tie-breaking game underway, the Lady Cubs and Lady Eagles had numerous volleys that lasted several minutes. The Anahuac girls won each and every one of these impressive back and forth plays, but overall did fall short 12-15 and for the night.
On September 25, the girls were ready to overcome all the small details of why they could not put Bob Hope School away as they faced Kirbyville Lady Wildcats here in Anahuac. Erin Willcox started the game off with tough serves and a Happy Birthday spike that had the entire gym rooting and hollering. With great passes by Mallory Hendrix, Isabella Hornsby, and Caylee Garcia, the girls were able to defeat the Lady Cats in the first game 25-18. The second game did not go as smoothly with too many missed serves and confusion on the court. The Lady Cubs fell short 16-25 but came back strong for the tie-breaking third game. The girls were never behind even though the score remained very close. Each point had to be earned and communication was key. The Lady Cubs blossomed as a team in this third game and began to understand the importance of mental and physical momentum in the game of volleyball. They won 15-11!
The best servers of the night were Jaci Fulton with 9 serves, Erin Willcox with 8, Bella Hornsby with 5, and Mallory Hendrix with 4. Leading in aces was Erin Willcox with 5 and Bella Hornsby with 3. Hannah Kelley, Hannah Edwards, Angela Rodriguez had some great saves whereas Ryleigh Richards and Phoebe Hampton helped out on the front row.
Congrats to these girls and come watch them play Buna next Monday, October 2 here in Anahuac!
